Street Banner Program Celebrates Whittier’s Artistic Heritage

December 14, 2009

The Whittier Cultural Arts Foundation has joined with the City of Whittier Community Services Department to co-sponsor the 2010 Whittier Community Street Banner program.
Conceived with the intention of taking art out into the open for the enjoyment of passersby on a day to day basis, the banners submitted by artists of all ages will be publicly displayed in 2010 in a variety of outdoor settings.

The theme of the 2010 Street Banner Program is “Among the Hills,” a reference to the lyric poem published in 1869 by John Greenleaf Whittier, the poet for whom the town is named. By selecting a line from a Whittier work, the program sponsors hope to encourage participants and other residents to explore the poet’s compositions and appreciate the connections between poetry and visual art as means of artistic expression.

In addition, by tying in the Whittier title, “Among the Hills” with the natural landscape of the town’s surrounds, Street banner program sponsors encourage entrants to celebrate the beauty of the Whittier landscape and the ways in which residents can gain a fuller appreciation of their environment.
